Update Babel and its presets

I noticed in package.json that Babel's version is rather obsolete. The same is about:

...
"babel-core": "^6.26.3",
"babel-preset-env": "^1.7.0",
...

Is it possible update them without breaking library itself?

Not working on VSCode 1.30.2 (Linux)

The CSS file itself might need permissions adjusting. I can see from your settings that it's in downloads and I know that another user found that their downloads path was blocking access to the CSS file. I'd look there to start. Alternatively, try moving the CSS file to a different path altogether.

Have you installed and enabled the base synthwave theme from VS marketplace?

thiagoiferreira

issue commentrobb0wen/synthwave-vscode

Do you know how to package this as an extension?

It's a bit messy due to how VS code generates the CSS from its theme json. I used the editor's dev tools to see which classnames it was assigning to the code. These are the .mtkX { ... } classes you can see. Once I had adjusted my colours I took these classes to write the CSS.

My original extension was trying to inject the CSS into the editor context, but I found that the 'Custom CSS and JS' plugin existed and was already doing this job.

Could you add the glowing theme as a new one? This way no tweaks would be needed. (Those are not working for me anyway.)

csutorasr

- question about the glow and theme - Hi!

I used VS code's built in devtools to find out the appropriate classnames needed to customise the CSS. These are the .mtkX { ... } classes you see in the CSS file. It's best to adjust the main theme colours first though, because the classes get generated and the classname changes as you add and remove colours in the theme json file.

Hope that helps!

If you edit the CSS you have to re-run the 'enable CSS and JS plugin' from your command palette before the changes will be visible. However, if you aren't seeing the glow, then it could be that the plugin isn't working. Ah I see. Thanks. In which case, unfortunately that isn't possible at the moment. There's no simple means of adding the glowing text-effect to a theme without including the workaround for custom CSS files.

I wish it weren't the case, but until (or rather, if) VS Code gets native support for custom CSS files I don't think this will be possible.

Update README: synthwave84.css doesn't need to be copied to another location if it's already present in the extensions folder

I originally wanted to do it this way. The issue I see though, is that the file-path to the extension changes every time it updates a version number. This means that any update to the extension will break the glow, regardless of whether or not the CSS file has changed.

Currently, copying it means that unless the glow CSS has been updated, it will persist as it was prior to the update.

There are definitely pros and cons to both methods.

I'd be interested to get more feedback as to which was preferred.

Sorry to hear that. Do you see glow on any other file types, JS or HTML for example?

The glow on JSON files in particular is deliberately very minimal. My reasoning is that JSON tends to contain large amounts of text or html data, so it all glowing would be a bit much. I'm not personally a C# user so it might not yet be well optimised for that language.

I managed to manually add the power mode with the theme.

It looks like this:

It would be cool to install it as a dependency of the theme or if it not possible, Maybe adding some bonus to the README with the correct additional instructions to set it up. (Custom settings.json for highlight color, etc)

Not compatible with vs 1.20.0

Thanks! I've given this a lot of though and, whilst I was considering reducing the version number to allow it to be installed on older editions, I've decided it's best to leave it as-is. 1.33.0 is the minimum install version.

Until VS Code adds support for custom CSS natively, adding the glow to the theme is experimental (read: a bit of a hack). Locking it at 1.33.0 I at least know it's possible to get it working with the versions of VS Code, and the Custom CSS and JS extension at the time of the original launch. The installation is already messy and I don't want to muddy it further, or risk editor instability, by introducing older versions into the mix.

A lot of themes differentiate variable name colors from object paths. Others also use a different color of text for the last property in an object. It would be a great improvement to add additional contrast.

Examples of other themes that have contrast in variable names and objects..

It's possible that the version you have installed on Linux is an older version.

From v0.0.3 onwards the glow has a slight opacity added to increase readability. Because of the manual installation process, the CSS file doesn't automatically update when the extension does. This means that the CSS on your Linux install will have remainedthe same as it was when it was first installed, regardless of the extension version number.

I'm going to update the readme screenshot in the next release. The current screenshot was the one I posted in my original tweet, however that was taken very early on and I don't feel that it is as representative of the final project as I would like (strings, for example, are white in the original screenshot).

Add 'neon flicker'

This adds a subtle flicker animation to .mtk7 which seemed to be a good balance compared to the other elements with the neon glow text-shadow.

Thinking about this more this flicker might not be for everyone. I currently have it in the primary file. Thoughts on updating this PR to have the following structure?

  • synthwave84.css
  • syntwave84-no-flicker.css
  • synthwave84-no-flicker-no-glow.css

Another weird quirk is that although the animation-fill-mode is 'forwards', if one of the animated elements leaves the viewport and is scrolled back into view the animation restarts which I am not a fan of. This also seems to happen when you hover the animated element after the animation completes. IMO the animation should only happen once with a not-so-common event (like only animated when the file initially opens).

Support 'Operator Mono' font

The font setting is independent of the theme, but I guess it's the overall use of italics.

Some themes, such as Cobalt2 have more italics for html attributes etc. The problem is that for people who aren't using operator mono, all the italics can look a bit...weird.

I think the best solution would be to add a secondary theme variant that has extra italics.

Do you know how to package this as an extension?

There's a Yeoman generator for creating the starter framework extensions which you could use (https://code.visualstudio.com/api/get-started/your-first-extension). You'd probably need to write the extension to inject the CSS script tags into the editor using JS. I was attempting to do something similar before I found the Custom CSS and JS plugin.

As far as I am aware though, the colour theme side of things would need to remain a separate extension. I could be wrong on that though, this theme is my first foray into VS Code extensions.

[Question] any plan on releasing for VS2017?

I don't personally have plans to port it at the moment, but I'd welcome anyone who wanted to try. If VS2017 supports custom CSS in themes then there's no reason why it wouldn't also be possible

Thanks. I had clearly had too much coffee when I wrote the readme 😂

After activating the CSS through the Custom CSS and JS Loader pluggin and running "Enable Custom CSS and JS", booting VSCodium gives me this error. I don't know if this occurs on VSCode or if it's a bug within VSCode/VSCodium itself.

Running "Disable Custom CSS and JS" fixes the problem.

This is a side-effect of the custom CSS plugin as detailed on their installation page https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=be5invis.vscode-custom-css.

It isn't actually corrupted, and you can dismiss the message.
