grml-zshrc: provide native systemd support in Start/Stop/... functions and cmdline completion

Our __start_stop function, which is used as helper function within our Start, Stop, Restart,... functions doesn't provide native support for systemd. While usage of service still works, it would be nice if we could support systemctl usage.

Also our _grmlinitd function doesn't complete systemd unit files, but only init scripts. This means that e.g. Start N<tab> doesn't detect/complete NetworkManager.service, as the network-manager Debian package ships a systemd unit file but not an init script.

Update Memtest86+

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. We use the memtest86+ file as shipped by Debian's memtest86+ package, so the proper way to get this sorted out is to ensure that the memtest86+ package get's updated within Debian. See https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=977217 + https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=989030, I sent a friendly ping there.

About the boot option 'ssh'

Regarding:

  • better move the ssh to the end of the boot option for grml2usb

Need to look into this yet, what's current state and what could possibly be done about it.

  • add a ssh enabled option to grml64-full, the grml64-full release 2020.06 does not have it

This is actually just an inconsistency, the BIOS boot menu (isolinux/syslinux) provides the SSH boot option, while the EFI one (GRUB) doesn't provide such an entry. That's related to https://github.com/grml/grml/issues/10

I don't have any plans to support such an option, but it should be enough to just replace initramfs-tools in the packages files with dracut, nor?

You need to build your ISO using grml-live with SECURE_BOOT=debian enabled.

commit sha dfaf77aa87d08278f9af30d01243f27336b60f57

GRMLBASE/15-initsetup: provide workaround for failing rsyslog Previous versions of the rsyslog package provided its rsyslog systemd unit file as /lib/systemd/system/rsyslog.service. Starting with rsyslog v8.2108.0-1, the file is provided as /usr/lib/systemd/system/rsyslog.service though. This change is related to the "dh_installsystemd: Prefer /usr/lib/systemd/ to /lib/systemd" change from debhelper v13.4, which furthermore seems to be related to the usrmerge situation. Now executing `systemctl preset-all` fails though: | # systemctl preset-all | [...] | Failed to preset unit, file /etc/systemd/system/syslog.service already exists and is a symlink to /lib/systemd/system/rsyslog.service. By manually removing the /etc/systemd/system/syslog.service symlink, the appropriate symlink (from /etc/systemd/system/syslog.service towards /usr/lib/systemd/system/rsyslog.service) gets set up as expected again. Reported towards Debian as #992847, but until it's fixed in the upstream packaging, we need a workaround in our build tools.

commit sha 1ca3ec59aeb6d70c7621bebe7ba2bf2fd38bbbf1

EFI support: fix for grub-install usage with efivarfs We had to apply fixes due to efivars vs efivarfs in Debian kernel versions >=5.10, and addressed them in commit d91d9f3ef. Those changes were incomplete though: while efibootmgr was invoked in the according and expected environment, invocation of grub-install doesn't reliably work (as at that time /sys/firmware/efi/efivars is no longer accessible). GRUB installation on EFI systems without /sys/firmware/efi/efivars present warns with (also see https://sources.debian.org/src/grub2/2.04-20/debian/patches/efi-variable-storage-minimise-writes.patch/?hl=650#L650): | EFI variables are not supported on this system But it returns with exit code 0. This leaves us with an incomplete and therefore not booting GRUB EFI environment. Fix it by unmounting /sys/firmware/efi/efivars only from within our final stage.

commit sha 093e8a1b6b0289a92e6b9b919e94a78ef723c547

Update DEBIAN_STABLE's apt sources.list configuration for bullseye Related fix for commit 07181b4c86f. Now that bullseye is the new Debian stable release, also adjust the backports entry accordingly. FTR, when using "stable-backports" instead of "bullseye-backports", apt warns about: | W: Conflicting distribution: http://ftp.debian.org/debian stable-backports InRelease (expected stable-backports but got bullseye-backports) We might not worry about this, but it might be confusing for users, so until we've a better approach for this, let's keep it as-is. Grml 2021.07 [full x2] has troubles booting usb

i used latest ultraiso [ that was updated recently ] ; pen drive linux and rufus... by now only the stick made by rufus was able to launch correctly the syslinux menu of boot...with an old pc : having the intel chipset 5520 [ dual cpu ] ichr10... i tried to boot the same stick with an aorus pro with and amd ryzen 3700 and 64 Go of ram .. but no way... even if i do it from bios that find a second part uefi...

the amd gigabyte board is also very "dumb" and unable to install win7.. and i have it very hard with 10 or 11... [ the one that works in all case is a mix based on 11 with a tpm ...bypass.. UEFI IS SHIT ] linux mint is not having troubles.. but i will recheck now that i have few stick "ready loading linuxes]

Sorry @sixcentgeorge, but your message is quite hard to read and understand for me. :-/

We don't support the proprietary nvidia-ati driver nor counter-strike or so. If you want to build/remaster Grml ISOs, take a look at our build tool grml-live, see https://grml.org/grml-live/ + https://github.com/grml/grml-live.

If you should have any concrete issues feel free to report them, though please start with reading available documentation and follow our issue templates and be more specific in your bug reports, also see https://grml.org/bugs/ and https://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html

We need to use floating point division, instead of integer division, otherwise the values end up as wrong and unexpected numbers in the histogram's buckets.

If you have Secure Boot enabled on your system, then the Grml ISOs won't boot. Once you disable Secure Boot, then it should work just fine, otherwise (if you need Secure Boot) you have to build a Grml ISO with Secure Boot support enabled.
