Use a semaphore to avoid fetching complete library to memory

  • Can anyone see a reason why a library scan always crashes for me if the semaphores get limited to LIMIT * DTHREADS even when i set the settings in the addon which control LIMIT and DTHREADS to 1 and does not crash any more if the semaphores are just limited by DTHREADS in which case i can set LIMIT and DTHREADS to numerous reasonable combinations?

That sounds really strange to me, I don't see any reason for that happening, except possibly the settings in the UI not matching what's read in this file.

Sorry I've got no idea why this fails... The behavior you describe is very strange.

Had a poke around over the weekend and i think i found the problem: because the variables DTHREADS and LIMIT get assigned only once at startup all changes in the settings dialog don't take effect until a restart/reboot. A possible fix for this is to just move them into the function itself: https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin-kodi/pull/413

I did a local database reset followed by a full scan after removing LIMIT from the Semaphore line with the following combinations (i also wrote down the time each scan took to complete, which may be a starting point to decide if parallel _get requests are even necessary:

I'd consider this just random variation (I'm assuming you tested once, and didn't average 100 runs of each wink), so it looks like these parameters don't do anything for sync speed in your particular case. Depending on the library size, I don't think that 13 minutes for a full sync is absolutely terrible either.

Could you share some details on your library composition? Number of movies, shows, episodes, albums & tracks synced?

Yeah i would also put it down to normal variation. If the connection speed to the server is fast enough it probably does not make a difference.

The Library is about 1500 Movies and 300 episodes no music. The scan was done on a RPI 4 1GB, on my desktop machine the scan finishes in about 2 minutes.

My intention of this PR was to save memory, so I removed the 2 in my second commit. Sorry for the confusion.

Ah, didn't check the previous commits, makes sense

Thats not right. The semaphore gets released after the results of one job are processed. That means after LIMIT items. See the line

https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin-kodi/blob/e510097193f0997c455c969d858d1b4c377c3a76/jellyfin_kodi/downloader.py#L326

This release call is within the for-loop that processes the results of a single job.

yeah i probably got confused at this point or missed the indentation.

I answered this above. Do you have an idea of how to size the semaphore right?

Not really, i would probably go the "just set it to DTHREADS" route as that is what i personally would expect the option to mean, but then again it might just be me and someone else expects something completely different.

If a fixed size queue would be better than a Semaphore i have no idea, but i also don't really see anything wrong with the current implementation.

I was able to fully sync on both the RPi4 and a RPI3+ with the number of semaphores set to just DTHREADS and was able to go reasonably high with the number of DTHREADS and the LIMIT.

With the original limit of DTHREADS * LIMIT it was probably more of a settings not taking effect yet problem as i basically was always running with a limit of 45 Semaphores each pulling 15 items, so theoretically it was still pulling over a third of my library into memory

Fix need for restart/reboot for sync settings changes to take effect

If LIMIT and DTHREADS are defined as global variables they only get assigned once at startup, this means that any changes to the number of download threads and max. items only take effect after the plugin gets restarted or the complete system reboots.

By moving them into the function itself they are read every time new items are fetched.

I'm assuming uppercase variable names are reserved for global variables, so i converted them to lowercase as well.

Use a semaphore to avoid fetching complete library to memory

After some additional testing i have some observations to share and a few questions that i hope are not too noobish ;)

2 * [max. item fetch limit] * [number of download threads] Where does the 2 come from in the maximum number of items to prefetch? The way i understand it right now, and please correct me if im wrong:

  • threads are started/semaphores aquired in batches of DTHREADS due to line https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin-kodi/blob/e510097193f0997c455c969d858d1b4c377c3a76/jellyfin_kodi/downloader.py#L282 and https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin-kodi/blob/e510097193f0997c455c969d858d1b4c377c3a76/jellyfin_kodi/downloader.py#L296

  • the maximum number of results stored from _get calls/tasks is LIMIT * DTHREADS which in turn contain the info for LIMIT movies/tv shows (so LIMIT * DTHREADS * LIMIT entries in memory in total) due to lines https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin-kodi/blob/e510097193f0997c455c969d858d1b4c377c3a76/jellyfin_kodi/downloader.py#L287, https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin-kodi/blob/e510097193f0997c455c969d858d1b4c377c3a76/jellyfin_kodi/downloader.py#L292 and https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin-kodi/blob/e510097193f0997c455c969d858d1b4c377c3a76/jellyfin_kodi/downloader.py#L266

  • once one batch of LIMIT * DTHREADS * LIMIT entries is processed another one gets downloaded

Now two related questions:

  • Should line https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin-kodi/blob/e510097193f0997c455c969d858d1b4c377c3a76/jellyfin_kodi/downloader.py#L287 just contain DTHREADS so that there is more transparency to the end user? As this would mean only LIMIT * DTHREAD entries would be kept in memory at any given time?

  • Can anyone see a reason why a library scan always crashes for me if the semaphores get limited to LIMIT * DTHREADS even when i set the settings in the addon which control LIMIT and DTHREADS to 1 and does not crash any more if the semaphores are just limited by DTHREADS in which case i can set LIMIT and DTHREADS to numerous reasonable combinations?

I did a local database reset followed by a full scan after removing LIMIT from the Semaphore line with the following combinations (i also wrote down the time each scan took to complete, which may be a starting point to decide if parallel _get requests are even necessary:

DTHREADS LIMIT TIME
1 1 12m13s
1 100 12m28s
3 20 11m56s
3 50 12m25s

Library scan crashes RPi 4 1GB

didn't have that much time, but it still crashes for me. Tried it on 2 freshly set up SD Cards with different options for parallel items and download threads. It looks like it fails on multiples of the number of parallel requests so maybe it could be something with the cleanup after one batch finished?

I tried running it again with debug log enabled but it took too long and now i had to cancel the sync

running the command does not fix the issue anymore. In my case i'm still able to upload and download larger files, the size shown is just wrong, and therefore the quota and used space calculations are also off by quite a bit if you have a couple of larger files. For systems which rely on correctly reported Quota i would describe this as install breaking.

Single User systems which do not rely on quota are probably still fine though

So @skjnldsv, i'm assuming this is then also a case of wontfix like: https://github.com/nextcloud/server/issues/16431? That would really be a shame as this would break a lot of installations for good, at least without a complete OS reinstall

NZB-Monkey failing to push to latest SABnzbd

I tried a few things but can't reproduce your error. I tried running NZBMonkey on Windows and Linux Machines and added nzb files to a local sabnzbd instance as well as a instance running on another machine in my lan.

I always just added the nzbkey to my config and set the target to sabnzbd.

Could you post your config (without the key of course) and environment (which php version is running on your windows machine, are you using the prebuilt binary?)

Does NZBMonkey work when you run it on your Ubuntu machine? And is this machine inside your LAN or is it a remote machine?

The only mention of a change in NZBDonkey i could find is: https://forums.sabnzbd.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=24887 And there the change was only necessary for the connection check, not the nzb push itself.

I'm having the same issue after an update to NC 19, it seems though that this is not directly related to the original problem. At least for me the file sizes are also incorrect in oc_filecache. I already ran a ./occ files:scan -p [myuser]/path/to/my/file -vvv as well as a ./occ files:scan --all -vvv which did not correct the entries in the database.

Library scan crashes RPi 4 1GB

I tried both.

My "normal" setup:

  • Installed deb package from official repository
  • configured nginx to proxy all requests for my domain.tld/jellyfin to running jellyfin instance
  • set /jellyfin as a base url in jellyfin dashboard
  • configured kodi plugin with mydomain.tld/jellyfin

(with local devices I also tried connecting directly with the local ip and base url to make sure its bit nginx that's causing the problems, i have not yet opened additional ports for direct external access)

My docker test setup:

  • pulled latest stable official docker container
  • mapped the port to a different one then the normal installation, so that both instances can run simultaneous
  • configured kodi plugin with local ip address and port

The download worked, I had to modify the zip slightly for kodi to be able to install it as it found an invalid structure (I just removed some git specific files/folders and recreated the zip with all files in another directory of the same name as the zip file.

However still no luck, it crashes roughly after the same time.

I can't download the file at the moment as I'm redirected to a login page, perhaps it's not set to public?

I just tried your update, unfortunately the problem persists.

Steps done on RPi 4 1GB and RPi 3b+:

  1. freshly installed vanilla LibreELEC 9.2.4
  2. Installed addon through your provided zip file
  3. Set up addon with server url, username and password, no further changes
  4. Chose addon mode and selected only movies as a library to sync

Default sync settings:

  • pagination max items: 15
  • pagination download threads: 3

On the RPi 4 1GB I also tried setting max items and download threads to 1 and try another scan, with the same result.

Library scan crashes RPi 4 1GB

I started using jellyfin with v10.5.5 everything seemed to work up to 10.6.0 with around ~700 movies and a few episodes.

I then updated to 10.6.1 and a day later to 10.6.2 as I saw 10.6.1 only a couple of days after its release. I then continued to copy over movies until the library reached ~1500 movies at this point I noticed the problems.

I also downgraded back to 10.6.0 which worked with around 700 movies to see if that fixes it but no luck. And if I understand correctly there where some breaking changes making a downgrade to 10.5.5 impossible. I'll try and read up some more on docker to see if I can install a clean 10.5.5 that way and see if this problem also exists pre 10.6

I had some time, so i tried setting up a fresh jellyfin server, this time i chose the docker container and mounted my Media Directory into it read only. After setting everything up and waiting for the initial scan it shows the same behavior as the deb package.

Strange that it's only happening to me. Could things like non english characters be a problem? I have some Asian and Nordic Movies which use some special characters in their folder name. (But then this should probably only be a problem on the server, and not with a client)

Feature Request: Make number of tabs configurable

We had initial few releases where we did implement this dynamic tabs approach. But for most people they don't use that many tabs, and for a simplistic design, we removed it later on. Maybe I'll attach the apk for those release and you can give it a shot. If you like we might give it a shot.

Sure I'd like to give the old version a go. It would probably be easier to reimplement that code instead of completely rewriting it

Library scan crashes RPi 4 1GB

I poked around the code a bit and it seems, that the plugin just uses the builtin library sync function from kodi, correct? In this case this probably is more of an issue with kodi/the data the jellyfin server sends? Is there anything i could try on the server? I'm currently running the deb Package on another RPi 4GB through a NGINX reverse proxy (i have also tried accessing it directly, at least with local clients)

For now i have enabled Swap in Libreelec, which enables it to complete a scan. For this it starts to use up to 400MB of RAM and then starts to swap, it then peaks at about 450MB in both RAM and Swap. After about 5% of the scan the Swap starts to grow a bit more until it reaches about 530MB, at the same time RAM usage goes down to about 360MB. After that it mostly stays there until towards the end of the scan both values go back down and settle at around 200 each after the scan finished.

Make number of tabs configurable

Description

I often switch between 3 or 4 different storage devices / directories and would like to have a separate tab for each of them.

With amaze right now I could bookmark each of these paths and switch between them that way however I think a simple swipe left or right or picking a tab from an always showing tab bar would be so much more comfortable

I'm currently also using root explorer just for this feature. However as I generally like amaze more and would like to migrate everything to open source apps it would be nice if more than 2 tabs would be possible.

Keep up the good work!

It crashed after a couple of entries, with debug logging enabled it took about 5-10 times longer to scan the same amount and crashed slightly later than without it.

I've also set the logging level to debug in the jellyfin addon. But it just generated a ton of output containing the metadata of the movie it was syncing at the time (the log file is about 350mb). I'm on the road over the weekend so I don't have access to it right now but I can try and extract some additional entries from it on Sunday. Uploading or posting the whole thing is not really feasible due to the size. Is there anything in particular which would be helpful or could I just filter out some stuff to reduce the size? The metadata entries are probably not really relevant?

The entries it did manage to scan seem to be correct and complete, the available ram just runs out after some time.

I have only tried to sync movies yet. There are also about 4 TV shows with a 1 or 2 seasons each on this server. I'll try to only sync those first and see if it can manage it.

I've also tried to reduce the gpu_mem and lower the display resolution so that kodi can use almost the full GB of ram.

Later tonight or tomorrow I also have access to the RPi 3B+ again and can check if it can still complete a full scan on a clean install. As I also installed the 10.6.1 and 10.6.2 updates after it did its initial sync.

I'll also try to grab some logs from this scan.

Describe the bug On a RPi 4 1GB with libreelec 9.2.3 a library scan with a largeish Library crashes kodi / the pi itself. The most entries it managed to scan where around 100

To Reproduce Set Up the addon as usual and start a scan for the library. It keeps consuming more and more RAM until it either crashes or freezes completely. (after consuming about 700-800MB of RAM)

The same library scans without a problem on a RPi 4 4GB and a few days ago with some fewer entries it also finished without error on a RPi 3b+
