Memory integrity: Not enough detailed information

No info on prerequisites or other dependencies.

This is the page you arrive on when you click the "Learn more" link under "Memory integrity" for "Core isolation" in the "Device security" section of the "Windows security" settings in Windows. And the reason 90% of the people there click the "Learn more" link is because they are experiencing some issue or problem related to "Memory integrity", for example they might have tried to turn on "Memory integrity" and got an error message saying something like: "Memory integrity can't be started. There may be an incompatibility on your device.".

So, make sure there are enough info in here to resolve any issues an end user might have regarding "Memory integrity" and any operation associated with it. Also there should be read-more-links to where you can find more detailed info on "Memory integrity" and anything else on which it depends on or which depend on it.

Multiple maximum possible secure scores

Hello.

I work at a CSP, and as such, I have access to several client tenants, and I observed that the maximum possible secure score changes across different tenants. In my understanding, this is contrary to what the documentation states: "We show you the full set of possible improvements, regardless of license, so you can understand security best practices and improve your score. Your absolute security posture is represented by Secure Score, which stays the same no matter what product licenses your organization owns."

Can you please clarify if I misunderstood it, and if so, what will be taken into consideration to calculate the maximum possible secure score?

Regards.

Missing Content: Checksum values for the downloaded file (MSERT.exe) are not provided or available

ISSUE: After clicking the link to download the Microsoft Safety Scanner, a best (and my standard) practice is to perform a Checksum calculation on the file for comparison with the vendor provided value for that file.

The information required to perform a comparison against is not available on the download page.

MISSING CONTENT: Name: MSERT.exe Size: 121043888 bytes (115 MiB) SHA256: D4C8D0F2FD43271C14A30C4827EF6E09AC8DCAF05FF3FF9CF8ECBBCD6D57051B

RESOLUTION: Add the missing information to the download page in a location close to the link that initiates the download of the file.

FIX FORWARD: Update the standard template used for all download links on any content pages. Require three (3) mandatory fields to display the: File Name, File Size, and SHA256 value for each item that can be downloaded from the page.

Thank you,

David Kirchmer

Clarify Supported Browsers

Hi, The documentation does not list suppored browsers under "Prerequisites", leading readers to believe Chrome/Firefox, as referenced in User experience, is only examples of browsers where Network Protection is used to enable web content filtering.

Tests using Opera show that while Network Protection works, Web Content Filtering does not.

Please also improve the text regarding this product being in Public Preview. As is, it is not stated, just that the documentation has some information that may be about things that are not yet fully released.

Other than that, thank you everyone involed for the great work you do with the documentation. I use it almost daily and it truly is a great resource.

Clarify Supported Browsers

Hi @DanielWahlgren. Yes we are currently in public preview. That is the legal text we use to say that the product has not been fully released.

All browsers and 3rd party applications are supported (though not native integration) through the network protection stack. The sites in WCF should be blocked in Opera, Firefox and Chrome. We just tested Opera and don’t see any issues (screen shot below). Make sure your policies are set up correctly.

Because the user experience is not the same as Edge (see below as well), some users may not realize that the connection is blocked. The notification becomes browser dependent (see how firefox is also different) and a toast is issued. The toast is also suppressed and timed so users are not getting bombarded with notifications (for example when a site attempts to open multiple blocked sites that are embedded).

Hope that helps!

How fresh is the software inventory from the endpoint?

While this is a great feature, I find myself asking the same question over and over again... how fresh or accurate is the endpoint inventory that we see in this console and that the CVE and other product data is joined to? When I go out to my team and push for a software update, it would make our lives a whole lot better if we could force an update to push to the cloud when we were done doing updates on a particular machine. This way our threat dashboard is now up to date and accurate for that endpoint. At a minimum, it would be nice if you timestamped that data collected and made it available in the GUI and also document how long a 'normal' (not forced) inventory occurs on each end point and then pushes to the cloud.

Different group policy path for Network Protection on Windows Server 2016

In Turning on network protection , it says the group policy path to enable network protection is Windows components > Microsoft Defender Antivirus > Windows Defender Exploit Guard > Network protection.

On Windows Server 2016 (with Windows 10 2004 ADMX), the path is Windows components > Windows Defender Antivirus > Windows Defender Exploit Guard > Network protection.

Perhaps it's worth noting this difference in the article?

The article states:

Before trying out this feature, make sure you have the following:

Is a Windows 10 E5 License really needed? I thought, a Microsoft ATP license + Windows 10 E3 would be sufficient. Is a Microsoft 365 E3 + Microsoft 365 E5 Security add on (which includes MDATP) sufficient for the web content filtering?

Windows 10 E5 License needed

Hi @denishol

Thank you for your question. I checked with the Marketing team and from what I understand, for Web Content Filtering to work you need to be able to see reports and configure it in Microsoft Defender Security Center. You technically have three options:

  1. Have the Windows 10 Enterprise E5 license.
  2. Microsoft 365 E3 + Microsoft 365 E5 Security add on.
  3. Windows 10 E3 + the Microsoft Defender ATP standalone SKU (but this doesn’t make sense as you are better off getting Windows 10 Enterprise E5 license, and the price is no different).

Hope that helps. I'll update the docs to show the second option.
