Ask questionsUnable to self-host Pubpub as proper README missing

Hi,

we are trying to install Pubpub to be used as part of a masters course in experimental publishing with a strong FLOSS and privacy component.

We would be interested in self-hosting our own instance of Pubpub, but due to missing install notes we are left with doing a lot of guesswork when trying to make Pubpub run. One of the major hurdles is the config.js file and all the services it requires - Firebase, CloudAMQP, Mailchimp & Mailgun, AWS.

Are all of these dependencies mandatory ? Is it possible to just run Pubpub locally with a Postgres database ? If not, which ones are crucial and which can be omitted ? What are the minimum requirements to make Pubpub run ?

The issue #277 mentions that

We still aren't really in a place to support self-installs quite yet

Did anything change in those soon to be two years ?

Thanks for the interest in running PubPub! We're still not at a place where we're really supporting self-installs, as that's just not our growth focus at the moment.

But you could run PubPub locally by setting up all of the services described in config.js and providing the keys. Firebase and Postgres are the main dependencies you'll need to make it work. There's nothing to stop the former from being local as long as it's accessible via a URI. AWS is primarily for S3 for file uploads for images, video, etc. for Pubs. Technically optional, but you're going to want it to take advantage of the core features. There may be places in the code where you need to modify to use your own bucket names. CloudAMQP is primarily for processing imports and exports, so isn't strictly needed, although recommended. Mailchimp is only used for our newsletter signup in the footer and signin page, so totally optional. Mailgun is only used to send transactional account creation, password reset, etc. emails.

I hope that's helpful – again, not something we really plan on supporting right now, but definitely plausible to setup if you're interested in checking it out.
