Error installing vugugen

Hi Brad, that did the trick. I changed the value on my system. I'm thinking maybe it wasn't the best choice.

On Sat, Jun 20, 2020 at 10:33 PM Brad Peabody notifications@github.com wrote:

Thanks, I see the issue. GO111MODULE is set to "on". I'm able to reproduce by toggling GO111MODULE from being unset vs "on" and it causes the error to not happen/happen.

Can you please re-test with GO111MODULE unset? For example:

GO111MODULE="" vgrun -install-tools

Did you change the value of GO111MODULE on your system or is this default? (It looks like you're using Homebrew's Go, perhaps it has different defaults?)

Mirror reflect self view

Summary

Mirror reflect the video of the local user.

Motivation

We are used to seeing ourselves in mirrors, reflected. Seeing ourselves not reflected this way feels uncanny and uncomfortable even though it is how others see us. Also this is how most other video chat apps do it.

Describe alternatives you've considered

We could leave it as it is, but I don't think that is a good idea.

I checked peer-call, which does work on Safari, and found that peer-call does not ever subclass MediaStream: https://github.com/peer-calls/peer-calls/search?q=mediastream&unscoped_q=mediastream.

So I am thinking that in order for ion-app-web to support Safari, it will need to use containment rather than inheritance.

The debugging breakage was due to trying to debug a production deployment. Running ion-app-web from npm start has non-minified sources suitable for debugging.

It's actually stream.publish which the minifier had abbreviated to t.publish. That's a LocalStream object from ion-sdk-js, which extends Stream also from ion-sdk-js, which extends MediaStream (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/MediaStream). In Chrome, the stream has a publish method as defined in LocalStream:

Screen Shot 2020-06-06 at 9 52 10 PM

In Safari for some reason it is missing that method, along with some others:

Screen Shot 2020-06-06 at 9 51 56 PM

One possibility is that Safari does not allow subclassing MediaStream. @jbrady42 , what do you think?

What did you do?

cd ion

npm start

In the browser, I entered a room name and user name.

What did you expect?

I expected to see a video of myself and a spinner for the next guest.

What happened?

The self video did not appear and there was a web socket error:

WebSocket connection to 'wss://localhost:8443/ws?peer=8024cba3-aa81-47a7-8ec9-e48c6c97d434' failed: Error in connection establishment: net::ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR

I worked around it by hard coding the websocket URL to wss://ion.notmyactualdomain.live where I have deployed ion and ion-app-web.

The debugging seems to be completely broken. I'm not sure if that is due to the use of webpack, or React, or babel, or some combination of those.

Add a fix to nginx config

I tried several times before this to run through the quick install and it didn't work for me. The change in my PR fixed it for me earlier today, though I forgot to include in the PR that I also ran apt remove jitsi-meet-turnserver.

However, I just tried running through the quick install instructions again twice in an attempt to reproduce the problem I was encountering, and both times the steps produced a working server without my additional steps. I guess the packages got updated with some fixes, not really sure what happened.

Anyway, I'm glad it works now. Thanks for having a look at my PR.

Without this change, the example at doc/examples/index.html wasn't showing video on Safari 13.1 (14609.1.20.111.8). That was because the height constraint was being set to { ideal: 720, max: 720, min: 240 }, but Safari doesn't allow that, at least not on version 13.1.

Apparently it was because apt install nodejs installs Node version 8 on Ubuntu 18 by default, and that's not a recent enough version of Node to run this app. I got it working by doing this:

$ curl -o- -L https://yarnpkg.com/install.sh | bash
$ apt install -y nodejs
