feat: Port PowerShell from core package

Build failed on Windows (AppVeyor CI) because && character does not work on PowerShell the same way as in Bash etc.

npm-run-all allows to fix that issue, so that it will be possible to run npm tasks across different platforms.

Run scripts sequentially with npm-run-all. Example from their documentation:

$ npm-run-all clean lint build This is same as npm run clean && npm run lint && npm run build

Individual npm tasks are separate, and the npm-run-all command is used to run them in order.

@eemeli Agreed. Mainly have been wondering what has been going on with Meetabit, as almost every other event organiser has stopped using it. Mainly question is what is the future of the service, if there haven't really been any visible development on it since many years ago.

Improve text contrast to make documentation easier to read

Documentation Is:

  • A bit difficult to read, because default font-weight: 300; is too light on a larger screen resolution.
  • Text color is not fully black, causing reduced visual contrast between text color and background.

<!-- Please place an x (no spaces!) in all [ ] that apply -->

  • [ ] Missing
  • [ ] Needed
  • [x] Confusing
  • [ ] Not Sure?

Please Explain in Detail...

Reason for improved visual contrast is mainly for making it the documentation more accessible for people with limited eyesight. At the same time, many developers spend their days reading a lot of text, and the speed & clarity of reading matters a lot.

Your Proposal for Changes

Example color and font-weight values that could make the content easier to read:

p {
  font-weight: 400;
  color: #000;
}

Moving custom files into Eleventy

@colabottles Not 100% sure of what you are trying to do, but the config file was a bit broken. Try something similar to this:

// Eleventy configuration
//
// Documentation about configuration syntax:
// https://www.11ty.io/docs/config/

module.exports = function(eleventyConfig) {
  // Copy specific files directly without modifying their contents

  eleventyConfig.addPassthroughCopy("css");
  eleventyConfig.addPassthroughCopy("js");
  eleventyConfig.addPassthroughCopy("images");
  eleventyConfig.addPassthroughCopy("fonts");

  return {
    templateFormats: ['md', 'njk', 'html', 'liquid'],

    // If your site lives in a different subdirectory, change this.
    // Leading or trailing slashes are all normalized away, so don’t worry about it.
    // If you don’t have a subdirectory, use "" or "/" (they do the same thing)
    // This is only used for URLs (it does not affect your file structure)
    pathPrefix: '/',

    markdownTemplateEngine: 'liquid',
    htmlTemplateEngine: 'njk',
    dataTemplateEngine: 'njk',
    passthroughFileCopy: true,
    dir: {
      input: '.',
      includes: '_includes',
      data: '_data',
      output: 'docs',
    },
  };
};

(Did not try the config example with your example files, but at least it is a bit closer to a working state.)

Privacy Policy document is missing

As the HelsinkiJS event organisers are collecting event participant data via 3rd party services (such as Meetabit), there should be a clearly written Privacy Policy document from the HelsinkiJS core team itself.

Even while Meetabit has their Terms of Service page, it lacks legally required details about transfer of the user data from EU area to other legal zones. Toughbyte Ltd (2704194-5) operates based from Finland, they have various employees outside of the EU area. That causes potential legal risks for the event organisers, as the event attendee data is transferred to various other countries. Even while the Meetabit website itself does not directly show a full list of the attendees on individual event pages, those details are available via individual user pages. Even if those would not be visible via the website itself, having that data in the database is enough of concern. While the company itself is trustworthy, question is mainly about legal requirements related to GDPR and local data privacy laws of Finland. As of now, the Terms of Service of Meetabit does not fulfil the requirements of GDPR, as it lacks various legally required sections (including mention about data protection officer).

Toughbyte's own GDPR Privacy Notice is clearly written with more care (and says that "All the personal data we have is stored on our databases in the EU"), but as these are two seperate services, they should update Meetabit's Terms to match the current regulations.

Proposal: include a map with next meetup location

Meetup location can be shown without having to use of Geolocation API. Most of the people would probably want to avoid giving website permission to access detailed location information (and that would also mean that helsinkijs.org website would need to include a mention about such feature usage in the Privacy Policy; thought Privacy Policy document is currently missing, and should be created in the future).

Mobile layout improvements for navigation and page header

On a recent mobile phone, visible top part of the Sass documentation https://sass-lang.com/documentation page looks similar to the following screenshot:

photo_2019-04-23_20-37-40

Potential details to improve:

  • Page title is a bit too close to the search box.
  • Top navigation takes most of the screen space on a mobile devices.
    • Page text contents itself are not visible on the screen, because navigation is taking most of the limited screen space.
  • Search box improvements:
    • Search box does not have a placeholder text (as it would make the feature more easy to understand to new visitors)

`scoop status` does not detect network failure

When running scoop status command without online connection, Scoop prints out message saying that Scoop is up to date. Everything is ok!. (even while the previous line says that connection failed).

> scoop status
fatal: unable to access 'https://github.com/lukesampson/scoop/': Could not resolve host: github.com
Scoop is up to date.
Everything is ok!

Expected output would have been to parse the Could not resolve host line, and adjust following lines (about Everything is ok!) accordingly.

After the network connection was recovered (by plugging the cable to the wall...), everything else was back to normal.

> scoop status

Good improvement. 👍

Any idea if this would also work on a JSON and JS front matter formats? (Details about those can be read from the Alternative Front Matter Formats section on the documentation.)

Would those need some extra rules to work?

Duplicate script tag on the `base.njk` layout template

Noticed a duplicate script tag on the base.njk layout template.

https://github.com/planetoftheweb/seven/blob/9dcb2660fffb38f768414248265de5979d30dc11/_site/_templates/layouts/base.njk#L14

That similar code line is loaded on the development environment, but not for the on the production builds. Problem is that currently the build will include a duplicate script tag, causing web browsers to load two different versions of vue library. That will slow down the page load, and potentially cause issues because of the version differences.

https://github.com/planetoftheweb/seven/blob/9dcb2660fffb38f768414248265de5979d30dc11/_site/_templates/layouts/base.njk#L19-L23

The issue is also visible on the official Seven website.

    <script src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/vue"></script>
    <!-- ... unrelated code removed ... -->

      <script src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/vue@2.6.10/dist/vue.min.js"></script>

Recommended way to fix this would be to remove the line 14 from the base.njk layout file.

issue openedMithrilJS/mithril.js

Add `sans-serif` fallback font-family to the mithril.js.org website

Description

Improve readability of the website by adding fallback font-family for the default font.

<!--- Provide a detailed description of the change or addition you are proposing -->

Why

  • Reduce the visual difference between unstyled content (before vs. after the webfont gets loaded).
  • Allow page to work even when people have blocked Google Fonts from their browsers.
  • Improve the page loading speed.

<!--- Why is this change important to you? How would you use it? -->

<!--- How can it benefit other users? -->

Possible Implementation & Open Questions

Currently:

body, table, h5 {
    font: normal 16px 'Open Sans';
}

Consider changing that to:

body, table, h5 {
    font-weight: normal;
    font-size: 16px;
    font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif;
}

<!--- Not obligatory, but suggest an idea for implementing addition or change -->

<!--- What still needs to be discussed -->

Is this something you're interested in working on?

Yes <!--- Yes or no -->

issue comment11ty/eleventy

Pagination is very confusing.

... or like this for a local installation of Eleventy:

DEBUG=Eleventy* ./node_modules/@11ty/eleventy/cmd.js

(These commands work in a terminal on Linux or macOS. In Windows, they would look different.)

cross-env package helps to run scripts that set and use environment variables, across platforms. Have been using it for running Eleventy on a local Windows machine. More details about cross-platform configuration from: https://github.com/josephdyer/skeleventy/issues/2#issuecomment-465754702

Global vs local install recommendation

Local first -approach would make sense for being the baseline for the documentation, even while some individual users might use Eleventy with a system-wide global mode installed package. For most of the workflows, local install (in a local node_modules directory) makes more sense, even while it requires slightly more disk space (if person has a lot of different projects).

"Rule of thumb: If your project depends on a package, it should be listed in your package.json file as a dependency and installed locally in your project, rather than globally.

Why Shouldn’t I Install Dependencies Globally? The obvious short answer is that your project depends on them."

Gulp & performance related issues

Outdated Gulp version

Noticed that:

  • npm audit warns about Gulp related security issues.

Suggested fix is to upgrade to more recent version of the tool

Tried to "upgrade" by updating Gulp package versions to latest v4.x related versions, but ended up with error messages. Most likely the Gulp configuration syntax has changed a bit, and some of the Gulp plugins that this Eleventy "starter kit" project requires are probably not compatible with the latest Gulp version.

Performance issues

Since the Gulp version is already outdated, was wondering if it would make sense to move forward either to the latest Gulp v4.x version, or alternatively to some other build tool. The biggest issue with Gulp have been the slow build times.

Part of the performance issues are caused by the combination of multiple different types of build pipelines:

  • Eleventy builds for various template languages.
  • Tailwind for building CSS output from the partly Tailwind-specfic "custom" CSS syntax.
  • gulp.js for the build pipeline that combines various other tools together, including Tailwind.

I do have my own package.json scripts that I had to adjust because of the Windows compatiblity related issues (shared earlier on another issue), but those don't change the core Guilp build pipeline.

PurgeCSS Gulp integration

Had various issues with the lack of optimized builds, where Tailwind ends up generating a huge 350-400+ kilobyte CSS files, since the post-processing of the generated CSS is not done properly. Tried to solve the issue by running gulp tasks two times, to make sure that Gulp's PostCSS plugin for PurgeCSS @fullhuman/postcss-purgecss would reduce the size of the CSS file.

Snippet from package.json file's scripts section:

    "build-serial": "npm-run-all --serial build:gulp build:eleventy build:gulp",
    "build:gulp": "gulp build",
    "build:eleventy": "eleventy --config=eleventy.config.js",

Originally the build script was parallel, but had to modify it to the --serial mode so that build steps would not get mixed with each other. Reason for the serial build pipeline was mostly the issues caused by the misbehaving PurgeCSS part of the Gulp pipeline.

    // Original version of the build task
    "build": "npm-run-all --parallel build:gulp build:eleventy",

Tailwind customization

For various reason, need to be able to customize the CSS styles. Had some odd problems on getting the changes to build, and was wondering about how the build pipeline really works.

Sidenotes

While I understand that part of the issue might be caused by my customized package.json scripts, I feel that there is room for improvement on the Tailwind integration part.

Mainly wondering whether I should spend time trying to debug Gulp related issues, or just throw Tailwind and Gulp away and rewrite major part of the template from scratch. That would be a wasted amount of effort, most likely, since there probably is a faster way to fix the problems.

Add host option to --serve

This would be useful for several use cases. Just thinking that there should be a disclaimer to note that the serve mode is only meant for development, not for production usage (as someone will likely end up using it for that too…).

Throw an error if includes or data directory is outside of Eleventy’s working directory

Good work with the initial concept. This kind of improvements increase my trust in the future of Eleventy. 👍

docs: website: links to "Made for" sections point to 404 errors

@shilman Yes, I thought it could be an issue with redirects. Generally it is a good idea to avoid adding the extra HTTP redirect step to the requests, as it slows down the page performance (even without having this kind of potential issues).

Thank you for the good tool. Lets make it even better, step by step. 😄

What should/does the cpp dictionary contain

Makes sense to split the dictionary to smaller parts. Would it be a good idea to have more specific subsets as a separate dictionaries, so that potential users could only load those sets that they most likely need?
