[mobile] straightforward way to import Lightning channel backups

currently on Android (4.1.5) you can import channel backups by going to the Send tab, pressing Scan and scanning the QR code of a channel backup. this works, but it's very counter-intuitive.

a better way would be to have a fourth button on the Channels screen, e.g. reading "Import", to do the same.

once a scan is successful, I feel a warning is warranted that the importing of the channel won't allow using it for payments on this device, it only serves as a backup to retrieve the funds in the channel in case the originating wallet is lost.

@UkoeHB I don't know in advance. I'm following the logic that van Saberhagen didn't expect it either that it will need to be changed.

Seraphis Address Schemes

Is it possible to devise an addresses scheme that won't have to be changed for a long time, e.g. not even with further ring size increases like Arcturus? Requiring everyone who wants to receive to generate a new address is a big pain point, breaking numerous use cases, both known and unknown.

provide a separate changelog with each release

please provide a separate changelog with each version increment, showing what changed compared to the preceding release, instead of copying the previous release's changelog (e.g. recently 3.9 -> 3.9.2). this way, users will know what they are updating to and can make an informed decision. I really liked how Antonella described changes for each release.

connection issues don't always have a description in the Account menu

so far when the Account button turned red because of a connection issue, there was always an explanatory box at the top of the Account menu (even if almost always it said the origin of the issue is unknown).

in the recent wave of short, intermittent outages (which we've been discussing on Slack), this explanatory box was often missing. this gave me the impression the app is not fully cognizant of the fact that it can't connect to the server (which, in turn, might be related to the conflicted copies).

is that intended?

does this show there is some special cause for the connection issues?

Expose the wallet seed in the GUI for wallet backup/recovery

channels have special keys created inside the wallet when the channel is created - so a seed is not enough to recover it

why don't you make the generation of those keys deterministic?

also, this issue is about the lack of a feature, and remains unresolved. please re-open it.

GPG-signed checksums for releases

the latest stable release's hashes (here) are signed with some other key than the one hosted here.

also, please don't rely on hosting keys on Keybase, it's a sketchy company and the links are dead.

Signal should allow words to be added to the dictionary

Since my last comment we've switched to use electron's built-in spellchecker which also uses hunspell dictionaries under the hood.

does that somehow enable adding words to the dictionary? I still can't do it.

this issue may be related, it suggests it's not possible: https://github.com/electron-userland/electron-spellchecker/issues/36

defining send amount(s) in fiat

@jarjarfan666 from my opening comment:

the wallet already has fiat display integrations.

it already does it if the feature is turned on in the settings. my proposal doesn't introduce any potential behavior that degrades privacy. if anything, it improves privacy, because people will be less prone to go to an online currency converter and give their IP, user agent and transaction amount to a website.

Add a pre-shared key encryption option

thanks for this issue, I've been wondering whether this is already possible in Element. this is important to build because, until post-quantum cryptography is standardized and implementations are safe and efficient, this is the only way to ensure the future privacy of e2ee communications.

option to turn off refresh

thank you! I got it working. my issue was that the Plugins menu only had the "Load Python library..." item. this gave the impression that the Options Editor Lite is a Python library, and I couldn't find it anywhere to download it as a plugin or extension. maybe some explanation would help there to clarify that you mean the core library of the Python language, and that plugins will become available once that library is located.

Would like to hide invites and their concomitant joins

some of this noise can be hidden here:

the down-arrow in the top right corner of the left sidebar, next to your username - all settings - preferences - Show join/leave messages (invites/kicks/bans unaffected)

I haven't yet found an option to turn off invites/kicks/bans.

PGP-sign Fosshub releases

the "signatures" on the Fosshub download page are just hashes, which means users can't be certain the binaries that are served came from you.

would you please use a release signing key, sign each binary and host the signatures next to the binaries?

chain database version mismatch

I tried to run Bob Wallet 0.8.0 with the hsd datadir I use with hsd 2.4.0.

Expected Behavior

the wallet recognizes the data.

Current Behavior

the wallet shows the following error: "Database version mismatch for database: "chain". Please run a data migration before opening." the error message isn't too helpful in how you can do the migration it asks for.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. have a synced hsd
  2. set Bob Wallet's hsd datadir to your hsd's datadir
  3. start Bob Wallet

Logs

I would show if I knew where Bob Wallet keeps them

recommend Bob Wallet instead of Namebase in the Handshake guide

@alexfreska thanks! their documentation is very similar in this regard, they don't instruct the user to take control of their HNS domain and rely on Namebase tooling. I will let them know when I get the time.

until then, everyone should know that you don't really own your Handshake name if you follow the Skynet documentation. it's yours as much as coins kept of Coinbase are "yours" (= they're not, the exchange can go down / censor you / exit scam / get hacked anytime).

not your keys, not your domains.

recommend Bob Wallet instead of Namebase in the Handshake guide

most names are on Namebase but you shouldn't encourage the further use of Namebase because it's a centralized exchange (worse, it's in the US). rather tell users to withdraw their domain to Bobwallet and hold/manage it there.

focus into password field when password query appears

when you need to approve something with a password (e.g. creating a transaction), the password query modal appears but the cursor is not focused into the text box, you need to click into the input field. this is unnecessary and could be avoided by automatically focusing the cursor into the field so you can type the password right away.

defining send amount(s) in fiat

to make the GUI wallet fit for everyday use, it would be very useful to be able to define amount(s) in a transaction in fiat.

currently if you want to send XMR that's worth a certain amount of dollars around the time of sending, the most intuitive way is to grab the current price from a website, make a calculation in a calculator, and paste the result. this is a lot of unnecessary overhead given that the wallet already has fiat display integrations.

making this possible presents some UI and app-level challenges, but I don't think these are insurmountable.

one way to enable this is to let users switch between XMR and fiat on the Send tab. currently the Amount field accepts input in XMR and the sum of the transaction is displayed in fiat (non-editable) at the bottom.

  • clicking on "XMR" next to the input field would switch to fiat input mode, where the amount you type in is interpreted in fiat and the XMR amount is computed based on the exchange rate, displayed where you previously had the fiat equivalent.
  • each time the exchange rate updates in the wallet, the fiat amount would stay fixed and the XMR amount would update, up to the point where the wallet constructs the transaction data.
  • clicking on the fiat currency symbol would switch back to XMR input mode.
  • each time you switch modes, if the input field is not empty, the amount would be converted to the currency of the mode you enter, using the current exchange rate.
  • preparing a transaction with multiple recipients could work along the same principles, with the differences that there are multiple input fields to handle and there is a summing taking place.

see some of my preliminary sketches below. input is welcome.

stuck at "Waiting for key" after having network issues once during starting app

today I had connectivity issues while Standard Notes started. it got stuck at this screen (see below) and didn't proceed even after my connectivity resumed (I gave it ample time to pick up). I restarted the app multiple times after this, with perfect network conditions, and it still didn't proceed.

I had to log out and log in to get back to normal, but this is a hassle because you need to enter certain setting each time you do this. it would be great if you could add some checks so that this doesn't happen!

theme colors aren't applied immediately at launch

when I launch SN (snap package), for a brief time, it flashes up as a white empty window regardless of my Midnight theme (which later of course is applied). this is quite uncomfortable to my eyes.

would it be possible to apply the active theme's colors from the get-go?

(obviously this applies only to when SN is only passcode-locked. the app can't know what theme you have if you're logged out.)
