microsoft/SecCon-Framework 104

Security configuration is complex. With thousands of group policies available in Windows, choosing the “best” setting is difficult. It’s not always obvious which permutations of policies are required to implement a complete scenario, and there are often unintended consequences of some security lockdowns. The SECCON Baselines divide configuration into Productivity Devices and Privileged Access Workstations. This document will focus on Productivity Devices (SECCON 5, 4, and 3). Microsoft’s current guidance on Privileged Access Workstations can be found at http://aka.ms/cyberpaw and as part of the Securing Privileged Access roadmap found at http://aka.ms/privsec.

Windows 7/8: Usermode files signed with pagehashes [/codeIntegrity linked files]

Hi,

It seems expiration of cross-signed root certificates on Windows 7/8 will affect user mode code that must be signed with page hashes (code that is linked with /codeIntegrity = PE file has set check integrity flag in DLL characteristics). Like code interacting with Security center and other.

We do more than 4 releases a day with amount of dlls linked with /codeIntegrity flag. Our biggest PE file has signature almost 2MB due to page hashes. We often face known issue with “bad markers” related to MSRC case MS12-024. According to Microsoft paid support only solution is to rebuild of dll hope new PE file do not hit this issue. The bigger PE file is bigger probability we hit this issue.

Unfortunately, significant amount of our customers still run Windows 7. Microsoft Code Verification Root expires in ‎November ‎1, ‎2025. I understand it is SHA1 signed with 4K RSA you consider insecure these days.

Could you please reconsider your decision and provide option to ISV to support customers remaining on unsupported Windows 7/8?

Please consider

  1. Issue new cross certificate to third party CA (SHA2 + bigger private key)
  2. Provide Windows 7/8 compatible signing by Microsoft like Attestation signing for Windows 7/8

We started information campaign to convince end customer(s) to upgrade to supported Windows versions. Unfortunately, our analysis shown us little progress on this issue.

Thank You

Pavol Mišík

Windows 7/8: Usermode files signed with pagehashes [/codeIntegrity linked files]

Hi @pmisik,

Apologies for the delay.

The recommended method for signing with /IntegrityCheck in the future will be to utilize Azure Code Signing (ACS). However, this service is not yet available, so as an interim solution, MVI partners should request a code signing certificate from Sectigo.

For more details, please see https://www.yammer.com/wsscengineering/#/files/852228988928. (You must be an MVI Partner to access that link.)

Sign driver for internal distribution

Sorry, I should clarify - you do need to run HCK/HLK tests for Windows Server 2016 and later.

And you can use either EV or non-EV codesign but the cert must be registered in Partner Center before you upload the package.

Disabling EWS connectivity to mailbox breaks free/busy calendar and Report Message Add-In Customization

@CMS009, additional follow-up:

Exchange Server requirements:

  • Exchange Online
  • Exchange Server 2016 or 2019

Outlook client requirements:

  • Windows: M365 subscription, or Outlook 2019 one-time purchase.
  • Mac: M365 subscription, or Outlook 2016 or later one-time purchase.
  • Outlook for iOS and Android
  • Outlook on the web (OWA) If both the client AND server-side requirements are met, then the add-in uses REST; otherwise, the add-in will fall back to EWS.

Please update to reflect correct time to remove restrictions

@MyTestingAccountThatIUse, tool tip change = code change. Your best bet for results is to open a support case and/or file a suggestion at https://office365.uservoice.com/.

In the topic (which I can fix), the current mention of time says:

It may take 30 minutes or more before restrictions are removed.

So I should change this to say:

It might take up to 24 hours for all restrictions to be removed from the user.

@shelriAlso, in the error statement, you say that, "he completed download via the export tool shows zero files in the results" does that mean that none of the search result were download to the local computer or does it mean that the eDiscovery Export tool shows that zero files were downloaded, but in actuality, they were downloaded? You can also send me email to my MSFT account.

This would mean that the export tool will show 100% completion but there will be zero files in the status underneath completion. I can provide a screenshot if you would like one?

Update ediscovery-troubleshooting-common-issues.md

@shelri In step 6, you state, "If this works..." What do you mean by "this" because the previous steps suggest different resolution steps. What specifically, fixes the issue caused by local virus scanner or disk issue? Also, in the error statement, you say that, "he completed download via the export tool shows zero files in the results" does that mean that none of the search result were download to the local computer or does it mean that the eDiscovery Export tool shows that zero files were downloaded, but in actuality, they were downloaded? You can also send me email to my MSFT account.

By this, I mean the previous steps. So for clarity, I guess It should say something like, If the previous steps resolved the issue, then we can safely determine the issue is related to the antivirus or a disk issue (client side).

@RuiPereiraTabares Can you please clarify and explain the change that you made? (you can also send email to me internally).mThe requirement is that an on-premises user is synched to AAD (in Exchange hybrid or not, as long as user is synched from on-premise AD to cloud AAD). Not sure what you mean by "synched with the Exchange schema"?

Sign driver for internal distribution

@tedhudek thank you for your response! You have said that

It is applicable to Server if you are doing full HCK/HLK signing, as attestation doesn't apply to Server.

The article describes that one can upload .cab with driver package, not .hlkx with test logs for internal signing. Is it obligatory to run HCK/HLK tests for windows server (including windows server 2012, 2012R2)?

And just to clarify

It is mandatory to sign with a non-EV codesign cert. If I have a driver with EV sign I can't sign it for internal distribution?
